Prime and Composite Numbers

A prime number is a positive integer that has exactly two factors, 1 and itself.

The number 7 is prime because the only two numbers that divide evenly into 7 are 1 and 7.

The number 12 is not prime because it has six factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. An integer with more than two factors is a composite number.

The number 1 is neither prime nor composite because it has only one factor: itself.
